The Students’ Union President of the University of Ilorin, Mr Faji Tobiloba was recently reinstated back to his office after a 14 day suspension. He was reinstated on Saturday, 6th May, 2023. This was in accordance to the student union compendium as stipulated by the Senate council. He was suspended on various reasons which include gross misconduct, creation of a seven man security council without the Senate council’s approval, and misappropriation of funds. After his return to office, he promised the student populace better governance in his remaining days in office.
In an interview with our UCJ correspondent, he gave us an insight into some particular issues he had to face when he was suspended.
Q: What would you like to say about your reinstatement back to your office?
Mr Faji Tobiloba: All right.
Well, the last few days have been turbulent but it has charted a clearer pathway and direction for our methods of governance at the Students’ Union, University of Ilorin.
My separation from duty was an opportunity to do two things; reflect over how far we have gone, and to evaluate how best we can handle the things that are ahead.
Of course, I’m committed to the Development-Oriented project we birthed and I’m committed to seeing this thrive and flourish beyond the horizon.
I’m excited and passionate about the job, and equally committed to the ease of students’ campus experience.
Q: Okay. You were suspended for an alleged misconduct, what was your response like when you heard about it?
Mr Faji Tobiloba: I was just surprised. Yes, It came to me as a shock and it was unexpected. But then, I’m thankful to God that it’s behind us and we are committed to pushing a common front, working collaboratively with all organs of the Union.
Q: Alright sir. You were also suspended due to a report sent by CEC members to the Senate Council, will you say the CEC members are right in taking that decision?
Mr Faji Tobiloba: Uhmm, Yes. In reality, there is a provision of the law from the student union compendium that provides the involvement of the Senate Council in such situations, enabling the Senate Council in Reconciliation steps.
Q: Final question sir. What would be your word of assurance to the student populace now that you have been reinstated?
Mr Faji Tobiloba: We have seen the political dynamics unfold and evidently, the Unionism we operate at the University of Ilorin is quite dynamic and intellectual. It’s grooming us for what is ahead. I really must appreciate the overwhelming support of the students of the Better by Far institution during these difficult moments. It was really difficult. The kind words, prayers, show of support, and genuine love helped me throughout. The storm is over now and I need Unilorites to understand that I’m as energetic as always and ready to pilot our Union together with the necessary stakeholders. I enjoin Unilorites not to forget our primary purpose on campus; therefore prioritizing academics. I encourage Unilorites to read intensively and extensively for the exams ahead. I wish all Unilorites the very best and good luck in the examinations. I equally enjoin that they shun all forms of examination malpractice and be prayerful at all times. And also shun social vices.
Thank you very much.
