The much anticipated 2021/22 session’s edition of the Faculty of engineering’s Dean’s cup kicked off on the 19th of June, 2023. The Dean’s cup, “held in honour of the Dean of the faculty (of engineering) and organised by NUESA(Nigerian Universities Engineering Students association) is a yearly event that is aimed at bringing the whole faculty together with a joint sporting event”, as said by the NUESA sport secretary, Busari Yusuf.
The winning team gets a medal, and the chance to take pictures with and shake the Dean, Sub-dean and other members of the faculty.
According to NUESA’s twitter page, this year’s games, as usual, consisted of the 10 engineering departments divided into two groups of 5 teams each. Each team is expected to play 4 games. The games are to be played at Maracana field, Unilorin.
Group A includes the departments of Food and Bioprocess engineering (FBE), Mechanical engineering(MEE), Agric and biosystems engineering (ABE), Metallurgical and Materials engineering (MME) and Computer engineering (CPE). Group B includes Civil engineering (CVE), Biomedical engineering (BME), Chemical engineering (CHE), Electrical engineering(ELE) and Water resources and environmental engineering (WREE).
The teams in each group will play against one another, and the top two teams in each group go to the next round, which is the semi-final. These four teams will then face one another, with two winners going to the final round.
The first two games were played on the 19th of June, 2023, between MEE and MME first, by 4pm, and CPE vs ABE, by 5pm. The final score for MEE vs MME was 2-1, with Yomi of MEE scoring tge first goal, Omat of MME scoring the second goal of the game (assisted by Ahmod) and Lamin(assisted by Joseph) scoring the second and winning goal for MEE.
The second game, CPE vs ABE, ended on a 0-1 note.
Subsequent games were held the following day, 20th of June, for teams in group B. ELE vs CHE, ending in a stalemate 0-0 and CVE vs WREE, ending 3-1.
21st of June featured FBE vs MME, with a 2-1 final score.
22nd of June was MEE vs CPE, 3-1, and ELE vs BME, 4-0.
23rd of June, CHE played against WREE, with the game ending 1-0.
24th of June included ABE vs MME, the results of which was inconclusive at first, but later ended on a 1-1 note. The same day featured BME vs CVE, with 0-2.
The games are set to continue from the 4th to 10th of July, with the top 4 going to the semi-finals.
The games have been fun-filled and action packed so far, and emotions are running high as to which department gets the medal and the title of champions this year.
